Could someone explain to me the main differences between the JD 90 Series vs the 4000 series tractors. I know this is a pretty basic question.... but my knowledge is pretty basic at this point. I apperciate all the help i've received so far. Anyway, I understand that the 90 Series has a manual tranny, while the 4000s have different options. I am familiar w/ the 4010 tranny options. However, it seems as though you can get a lot more HP for your dollar with the 90s, but what Im wondering what drawbacks will it have. My main question is with the performance. Thanks in advance.

You are correct, the single largest advantage of the 4000 series is the tranny (hydro), and it's clear the vast majority of folks prefer that route. I do feel it comes at a price and not only COST wise, because if you really use a hydro hard you will begin to hear it (very hot tranny) and this does reduce performance, but for the average homeowner of light contractor I feel this is small. In short, the 90-series offers more machine for the money, but you are left shifting gears and for some that's simply not an issue. I have thought this direction many times, but my application, constant turning, back&forward just lends itself for the hydro. However, if I had a wide open field, with no trees, the 90-series would be parked in my garage right now. ....

From an ergonomics perspective a key difference is in the operator platform. The easiest tractors in my opinion are the newer ones with "Flat" operator platform. Flat makes it easy to go backwards, you can shift sideways in the seat with no horse hump in the way. Kubota has the flatest floors that I know of, the Deere 4000 series has bit of a hump, probably called "semi flat", the 90 has more of a straddle as Deere calls it. I also believe this is a gear only tractor without a live PTO, problem if finish mowing or snowblowing is in your plans. ....

Drawbacks to the 90 series? Less of a market when looking to sell resulting in lower resale, more power than the 4000TEN series but harder to use all of it due to the lack of features such as MotionMatch, LoadMatch, etc. No self diagnostics like the TEN series so troubleshooting is slightly more time consuming. Tractors (like everything else) is priced according to demand; higher demand equals higher price.
This is not taking anything away from the 90 Series tractors because they are excellent, time tested tractors. ....

There are other differences too. Off the top of my head the 90 series have dry brakes vs. wet brakes, fixed ROPS vs. folding ROPS, fewer 3-point options (adjustable links, etc), poorer ergonomics (the 90 series is just too darn small for me), weaker hydraulics (IIRC), and probably some other stuff I don't remember. ....

The two leaders in this market both offer base tractors and deluxe models. Depending on you and your uses will seperate the right tractor for yu. The basic models don't offer much for electronics so you don't need self diagnostics as everything is more mechanical instead of electric over hydraulic for controls. The basic models do offer a reliable product but without the bells and whistles. Your dealer should be able to point out the differences when you visit him. The tractor needs to fit you and your tasks so take a good look and talk with your dealer as I've got very happy customers on both styles that swear by them but thats because they fit the needs of the operator. ....

THE 790 HAS LIVE PTO IN 4WD ONLY AND HAS NOT BEEN A PROBLEM WITH MY ERSKINE FRONT MOUNTED SNOW BLOWER.
JUST DEPRESS THE CLUTCH HALF WAY TO CHANGE GEARS. ....
